Not even three months have passed since the signing of the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on future relations e Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission is already forced to threaten fines and trade reprisals for Boris Johnson’s decision to violate the Brexit deal. At stake is the Irish Protocol, custom built to protect peace on the island and the EU single market. Johnson had promoted, signed and confirmed it in its current form, but continues to disown it because to some of the Tories and non-Irish Unionists is indigestible due to the creation of a customs border within the United Kingdom between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So, for the second time in less than six months Johnson decided to set aside the Protocol. The first was in October with a draft law on the internal market. Today it is with the unilateral decision to extend a grace period that allows some British goods bound for Northern Ireland not to be controlled.
