Once the executive planning, the bureaucratic process and the assignment of contracts have been completed, work has begun in Argenta (FE) for the recovery of the reservoir capacity of the main drainage channels of the Bologna plain and the complete innovation of the electromechanical component of the two main water pumping plants of the hydraulic nodes of Saiarino and Valle Santa. The main objective of these interventions is to increase the resilience of territories and agri-food production to ongoing climate changes, which see a progressive increase in both drought phases and extreme weather phenomena. For this reason the Rhenish Land Reclamation has nominated and proposed the regeneration of existing hydraulic workswith a significant recovery of functionality and capacity of the drainage system structures in the main consortium hydraulic nodes, located at the end of the basin, in Saiarino and Valle Santa di Argenta (FE).

In this area, all the surface waters of the Bolognese plain converge, to the right of the Reno river, through the large canals that connect the 2,000 kilometers of the artificial reclamation network to allow it to be released into the Rhine River.

Almost one hundred years after the activation of the General Reclamation Project, these real water highways present a strong reduction in their reservoir capacity, due to the sediments accumulated over a century of operation. A hydraulic regeneration was therefore proposed, through the resecting of the Lorgana, Garda and Menata canals. Thanks to this intervention, the recovery of over 300 thousand cubic meters of drainage capacity is expected. This will also allow the reuse for irrigation of the important volume of water that accumulates in the closing nodes of the reclamation network (water derived mainly from the Po river via the Emiliano Romagnolo Canal). The irrigation availability for the lowland lands north of the district is therefore increased, without further withdrawals from current surface water sources. To achieve the objective, the Saiarino and Valle Santa water pumping plants will be subject to a complete technological overhaul. In fact, these pumps with their 9 mechanical lifting pumps were designed for hydraulic reclamation and, therefore, suitable for lifting “peak” flow rates only for short periods, i.e. in rainy weather. Instead, the current project objectives intend to allow the raising of “minimal” flow rates but for prolonged periods, in order to satisfy the irrigation needs of that territory.

The Rhine land reclamation project therefore achieves a dual objective: the increase in both the hydraulic defense capacity (thanks to a greater storage volume of flood water) and the availability of surface water resources for irrigation purposes during the summer season.
