The Roman mosaic has found a home at Marc: “Now all the beauty of the work is visible”

The new location was presented at the Cadore Archaeological Museum after a thorough restoration with Interreg funds

PIEVE DI CADORE. New location for the Roman mosaic of Pieve di Cadore. After a delicate restoration process, the large mosaic floor, which until last spring was exhibited at the entrance to the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità, is now finally positioned inside the Cadore Archaeological Museum.

An operation, inserted within an Interreg Italy Austria project, which had been expected for years and which gives even more prestige and importance to the museum. During yesterday’s presentation it was the architect Daniela Zambelli, who followed the entire process in concert with the Superintendency of Venice, to retrace the process of the work: “It was not easy to complete this operation, the intervention required a study on how to relocate the mosaic which had already been moved in 1951 from its original position in front of the town hall. For years it had been considered necessary to move again, as the entrance to the building was not an appropriate and safe place for the work. This new position finally enhances the mosaic ».

«The restorers», continued Zambelli, «cut out the work following the ancient signs and then lightened the layer of concrete present. The various sections, once numbered, were restored in a workshop in Venice before being relocated. For this last step we studied a metal tray that could guarantee a repositioning with supports that would lighten the weight, allowing the best possible exposure to read the beauty of the work ».

The mosaic can therefore now be visited inside the Marc and becomes one of the most important finds among those on display. “Already 10 years ago we started a series of actions to make the most of our archaeological heritage and to bring as many people as possible to the museum”, underlined the consultant of the Magnifica, Letizia Lonzi, “we are very satisfied with this new relocation of the mosaic. which finally makes the most of it and has once again remarked how the Magnifica is working at its best to unite the interests and professionalism of different territories with a view to collaboration ».
