The school restarts, from today 8 out of 10 students in the classroom. The alarm of the principals: “100% space is not enough, it is a risk”

From today there will be 6 million and 850 thousand students physically in the classroom out of the total 8.5 million of state and equal institutions, 8 out of 10. They are 291 thousand more than last week, all from Campania, which has left the red zone. Apulia, Sardinia and Valle d’Aosta remain in the range of maximum rigor, with 390,000 pupils in distance learning. In all, almost one million and 657 thousand will still be at home in Dad next week. From 26 April, however, all schools will be 100% present in the yellow and orange areas. In the red zone the lessons will take place in class up to the eighth grade (now it is up to the first), while in high school the activity will take place at least 50% in presence.

Today the school unions were convened by the Ministry of Education to address the issues on the reopening of schools, on the Maturity exam and the updating of the safety protocol and on the recruitment of teachers. The unions, according to what is known, were summoned at 9.30 and 14.30: “A sign of great sensitivity – said Maddalena Gissi, Cisl School secretary – to have certain indications on the tracking and use of FFP2 masks. as indicated by the scientists ». Speranza defined the return to the courtroom as “a reasoned, not insane risk”. Despite the problems of transport and school overcrowding are present: the school must plan its future.

Giannelli, national association of principals: “More vaccinated, but transport and spaces are not solved problems”

“Schools must be allowed to establish the percentage of students they have to attend: there are 4-5 weeks left, a shift can be made so that 75/80% of students go in attendance and the other is decided by the school. Some element of flexibility would be necessary ». This was stated by Antonello Giannelli, president of the National Association of Principals, speaking at ‘Omnibus’ on La7: «Everything can go – added Giannelli – the point is the risk that we want to accept and be clear. Schools have to be told what they should do with those classrooms where 30 students cannot be spaced one meter apart: do we make them use the same or not? We are absolutely in favor of students returning to school, we have said this over and over in the past months, but we were told that there were no conditions on transport. Now on transport the situation is unchanged, what has changed is the number of vaccinations ». Giannelli concluded: «To this we add that the tracking plan is unable to take off. So some concern is legitimate. I think it would be right to let the schools decide how many students can go ».

The opinion of the experts
The resumption from school completely in the presence “worries a lot” Fabrizio Pregliasco, virologist at the State University of Milan, who spoke at ‘Agorà’ on Rai3. “Not so much the little ones, but adolescents and the youth range”, he recalls, are “affected by the English variant” of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus “more widely and with asymptomatic forms, therefore difficult to identify without screening”. The return to class «certainly represents a need – admits the expert – We want it, we want it and it is necessary in some ways. I also see it at university, in the courses I do on a deferred basis: the effectiveness is certainly lower at least for a part of the teaching, for the discussion, for the interaction ». However, while “a protocol within the school, if well followed, minimizes the data and some studies tell us, everything that is the mobility around is frightening – highlights Pregliasco – because in the end those are the most crowded places”. The Sinpia (Italian Society of Childhood and Adolescent Neuropsychiatry) of Lazio recommends that the protection of mental health be placed before the rush to the closure of the programs: “Wanting to complete school programs would determine an increase in the workload and worries in young people already heavily penalized. In this regard, attention is drawn to the increase in an important psychopathology that should not be underestimated, confirming how much childhood and adolescence have been neglected and heavily penalized in this year of pandemic ».
