The survivor of Casteldaccia and the birthday of the surviving daughter: “We have been abandoned”

PALERMO – “Today Asia turns 14 and we also spent this birthday with what is left of our family, without her mother and her brothers, without her grandparents and all our relatives who died on that tragic night of November 3 three years ago. In the meantime, no one has taken care of us anymore. We have been abandoned ». These are the words of Giuseppe Giordano, 37, who together with his daughter, brother-in-law and niece survived the tragedy that took place on the night of November 3, 2018 in the flood of Casteldaccia, when the flooding of the Milicia stream carried away 9 people destroying the rented house where they were spending the holidays of All Saints and the Dead.

The villa, in the Dagali di Cavallaro district, where 13 people were located, was hit by mud: his wife, 33-year-old Stefania Catanzaro, his 15-year-old son Federico, his 1-year-old daughter Rachele, his parents Antonino Giordano, 65 died. years old and Matilde Comito, 57, her sister Monia Giordano aged 40 and her son Francesco Rughoo aged 3. Nunzia Flamia, 65, mother of Luca Rughoo, the husband of Giuseppe Giordano’s sister, also lost her life.

“From that day on, the world collapsed, I am destroyed and my life is over, now I live only for my daughter Asia – says Giordano -. I had to close the motorcycle shop I had in via Lascaris, I was overwhelmed by everything. A difficult situation both from a psychological and an economic point of view ».

The funeral expenses of around 18 thousand euros were also a blow. «From the municipality of Palermo I received a contribution of about two thousand and 800 euros – underlines Giordano – then no one was seen again. Even Asia occasionally asks me why no one has helped us anymore after the numerous promises received. I have been without a job for months, now I have a collaboration with a private person whom I sincerely thank for the help he has given us, but it is difficult ». Relatives, friends and even clients have been close to Giordano who obviously hopes to have a job: “I renew the appeal to the institutions so that my life with Asia can be more serene thanks to a stable job for me, which can give us a better future”.
