The National Police captured Eliécer Acevedo Barón in Cúcuta, alleged leader of the criminal gang ‘Los Pelusos’, which has a strong presence on the Colombian-Venezuelan border and in the Catatumbo region, in the department of Norte de Santader.

According to the authorities, alias ‘Manuel’ was released from prison in 2021 after serving a 17-year sentence for crimes committed when he was a member of the Popular Liberation Army (EPL) guerrilla.

After months of monitoring, the Police located Acevedo in a home in the Juan Atalaya commune where he was captured for the alleged crimes of aggravated criminal conspiracy and aggravated homicide.

Police investigations link the former guerrilla with five murders that occurred in the Catatumbo region, bordering Venezuela.

According to the Police, the captured person ordered extortion payments, ordered homicides and controlled the drug trafficking business in Cúcuta and other municipalities in Norte de Santander.
