FLORENCE. «They intubate me, now I salute you. Love from tomorrow we will not talk anymore. I totally rely on God’s will and the decisions you will make. I love you so much. Be sure that God is greater ». It is the last message that Enzo Galli, the 45-year-old who died yesterday in the Careggi hospital, where he was hospitalized since last May 8 following the positivity to Covid, sent to his wife Simonetta Filippi last May 29 before they intubated him. Heartbreaking words, unfortunately overlapping with many others that have happened to report in this dramatic year and a half of pandemic. His story, with that of his wife, had gone viral last spring: the couple had gone to India to adopt a girl, but were then surprised by the dramatic progression of the Delta variant in the Asian state. Stuck in India with his wife (the first to have contracted Covid) Enzo then fell ill upon returning and his conditions worsened until the tragic end.
Today his wife, Simonetta, thanks the doctors: «Neither we nor the doctors expected what happened. The doctors were wonderful, both professionally and personally. They tried to save him until the last second. They were wonderful as the Italian consul in New Delhi was wonderful and he helped us in every way ».
And the pain of the family today is also joined by the condolences of the institutions with the words of the Tuscan governor Giani: «The death of Enzo Galli touched me deeply. I remember the strong concern of all of us when the couple was stuck in New Delhi due to Covid, where they had gone to adopt little Miriam. I still have Simonetta’s words imprinted in my memory with which we spoke on the phone to get news and let him know that we were in contact with the Farnesina to facilitate their return. I wanted to remember that moment as a difficult beginning of a story with a happy ending. With emotion I huddle around his wife, the whole family and the daughter that Enzo wanted. I express the condolences of the whole Tuscany Region ».
The funeral will take place on Friday morning at 10.30, in the church of San Lorenzo in Campi Bisenzio (Florence), the town where the couple resided.
