They set a date for the first trial against Salvador Sánchez Cerén

The Sixth Sentencing Court of San Salvador established for August the first criminal trial against the former president, Salvador Sánchez Cerén, who is being prosecuted in absentia and faces charges of illicit enrichment and money and asset laundering.

The trial is scheduled to take place from August 20 to 30, 2024, at 9:30 in the morning, at the Isidro Menéndez Judicial Center, a process in which the Prosecutor’s Office accuses Sánchez Cerén of appropriating $530,000 that he received in concept of stipends when he was vice president in the Mauricio Funes administration.

In addition to the former president, other high-ranking officials will also be prosecuted, including the former Minister of Public Works, Gerson Martínez; the former vice minister of the Environment, Lina Dolores Pohl Alfaro; Sánchez Cerén’s former private secretary, José Manuel Melgar Henríquez; the former president of the Autonomous Port Executive Commission (CEPA), José Guillermo Belarmino López, and the former Minister of Labor, Calixto Mejía Hernández.
