On March 21, Shen Deyong, the former deputy secretary of the party group and executive vice president of the Supreme Court of the Communist Party of China, was sacked, becoming the first minister-level senior official to be investigated this year.

On the afternoon of the 21st, the official website of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced that Shen Deyong, member of the Standing Committee of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and director of the Social and Legal Affairs Committee, was suspected of serious violations of discipline and law and is currently under review and supervision.

Mainland Caixin reported that several sources said that Shen Deyong was taken away around last Thursday (March 17). A week or two before that, two of his secretaries during the Supreme Court were taken away to assist in the investigation. . In addition, Shen Deyong also has relatives involved in the case to assist in the investigation.

Shen Deyong’s last public appearance in recent times was at the two sessions of the Communist Party of China this year.

According to public information, Shen Deyong was born in March 1954 in Xiushui, Jiangxi.

In 1983, Shen Deyong successively served in the Political and Legal Committee of the Jiangxi Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial High Court.

After 1993, Shen Deyong served successively as the vice president of the Jiangxi Provincial High Court, a member of the Party Leadership Group, a member of the Judicial Committee, and the deputy secretary of the Jiangxi Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection.

In 1998, he entered the Supreme Court of the Communist Party of China and served as vice president, member of the party group, and member of the adjudication committee.

In the second half of 2006, the Shanghai social security case came to light. In November of that year, Shen Deyong “airborne” in Shanghai served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee, and concurrently served as the leading group leader of the Shanghai Social Security Project Working Group, investigating and handling Shanghai social security cases.

After working in Shanghai for 17 months, in April 2008, Shen Deyong returned to the Supreme Court, served as the deputy secretary of the party group and executive vice president at the ministerial level, and was promoted to the first-level justice. In addition, he successively became a member of the Standing Committee of the 16th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China, a member of the 17th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, and a member of the 18th and 19th Central Committee.

In March 2018, 64-year-old Shen Deyong served as director of the Social and Legal Committee of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Three months later, on June 22, 2018, Shen Deyong, who was still a year away from retiring, was removed from the positions of executive vice president of the Supreme Court of the Communist Party of China, member of the adjudication committee, and judge.

Shen Deyong is a minister-level official who has served the Supreme Court twice for 18 years and the Executive Vice President for more than 10 years.

Shen Deyong is also the third person to be investigated among members of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China – the first two are Liu Shiyu and Fu Zhenghua. In addition, he is also the first person to be sacked among the former justices since the CCP’s “Judges Law” was passed in 1995.

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, there have been three central officials in the Supreme Court system. In addition to Shen Deyong, the other two are Xi Xiaoming, the then vice president of the Supreme Court, who was sacked in July 2015, and Meng Xiang, then a member of the Supreme Judicial Review Committee and director of the Executive Bureau, who was sacked in July 2021.

So far, Shen Deyong has become the 13th central management cadre to be sacked in 2022.
