Thousands “rise up” with the workers of the Gkn against the layoffs in Campi Bisenzio

Thousands of people, five thousand according to the organizers, arrived in front of the Campi Bisenzio plant from the unions and workers who risk losing their jobs.
The protest, ‘Let’s rise up with Gkn workers’ as written in the poster drawn by the cartoonist Zerocalcare, comes after weeks of garrison since the property, the English fund Melrose, announced on 9 July to close the factory and start the procedures for the dismissal of the 422 employees.

The goal is to raise a cry of alarm and to rise as a symbol of the entire metalworking sector that looks with concern at the end of the redundancy block. Workers from all over Italy responded to the appeal: hundreds of people arrived from Tuscany from every province, as shown by the banner of the Pisa airport, that of the Piaggio and Sammontana workers, but there are also workers from Electrolux in Forlì, buses expected by Melfi and Pomigliano d’Arco. For the institutions there are the mayor of Campi, Emiliano Fossi, the deputy mayor of Sesto Fiorentino, Damiano Sforzi, the senator Alessia Petraglia and the national secretary Fiom, Francesca Re David.

Among the choirs also “there is no despair but only so much anger that grows in me”. Around the area of ​​the Gkn plant, traffic is blocked and at the moment there are no problems in terms of public order. “The Government must follow up on the commitments made, and therefore we want the Mise table to be reconvened soon and the property to be asked to appear directly to start a negotiation”, said the mayor of Campi Bisenzio Emiliano Fossi during the march. The regional councilor for business crises Alessandra Nardini underlined the need for “a real negotiation to start. At the meeting in the Prefecture the attitude of the owners was unacceptable. We need to withdraw the dismissals, this dispute is national and we will not give up”. Also present were the councilor for work of Palazzo Vecchio Benedetta Albanese and the regional councilors for social Serena Spinelli and for the environment Monia Monni.
