“Security Tightens Ahead of Communist Party of China’s ‘Two Sessions’ in Beijing”

[New Tang Dynasty News, Beijing time, March 03, 2024] The upcoming “Two Sessions” of the Communist Party of China in Beijing has heightened tensions in the city. Security measures have been increased significantly, with more armed police patrolling in front of Tiananmen Square and a notable rise in the number of plainclothes officers around Xinhua Gate in Zhongnanhai.

The annual CPPCC and National People’s Congress meetings, known as the “Two Sessions,” are scheduled for March 4 and 5 respectively. Authorities have implemented enhanced “stability maintenance” measures to ensure the smooth running of the events.

Hong Kong’s “Ming Pao” reported that while the closed-loop management of this year’s Two Sessions will be lifted, security in Beijing remains stricter than in recent years. Checkpoints have been set up at intersections leading to the core section of Chang’an Street, where pedestrians must swipe their ID cards for verification before entry.

Even citizens riding bicycles near Tiananmen Square are required to pass through checkpoints, while teams of armed police patrol the area in larger numbers than usual. Additionally, the number of plainclothes officers in front of Xinhua Gate has more than doubled.

In a noticeable development, the presence of “Chaoyang people,” elderly individuals in red attire, has also multiplied along certain roads leading to the city center. Groups of these individuals, wearing red hats and sitting under red umbrellas, have been spotted every 500 meters or so.

Prior to the Two Sessions, “stability maintenance” measures were upgraded nationwide, particularly targeting dissidents, rights defenders, and petitioners. Some individuals in Beijing, Hebei, Jiangsu, Wuhan, and Guizhou have been subjected to strict control, with some placed under house arrest and others restricted from traveling freely.

Reports have surfaced of individuals being closely monitored, with one child expressing reluctance to attend school due to constant surveillance by authorities. Furthermore, dissidents have been notified of their mandatory relocation during the Two Sessions period to prevent any disturbances.

In a separate development, fierce infighting among top Communist Party leaders has ensued, leading to the termination or dismissal of over 20 National People’s Congress deputies. The unprecedented number of dismissals, including high-ranking military officials implicated in corruption scandals, has added to the tense atmosphere surrounding the upcoming Two Sessions.

As the authorities work to maintain stability and ensure the smooth operation of the Communist Party’s Two Sessions, the heightened security measures have sparked concerns about the level of control and surveillance in Beijing during this critical period.
