CNN reported that the U.S. Senate Armed Forces Committee held a hearing on defense authorization requirements for fiscal year 2022, and Taiwan became a prominent issue during the meeting.
Republican Missouri Senator Josh Hawley asked Mark Milley at the hearing whether the US military could defend Taiwan if the Communists invaded and seized Taiwan. Milly replied: “If a political decision is made in accordance with the’Taiwan Relations Act’, I can assure you that we have such capabilities.”
Milli also said at the hearing that it would not be easy for the Communist army if the CCP wanted to take Taiwan by force.
He said: “If you want a military invasion of Taiwan, you have to cross the strait, and the Taiwan Strait is equipped with considerable strength; to capture an island the size of Taiwan, with such a military strength and population, it is an extremely complicated and difficult operation… It’s very difficult to do.”
Holly further asked whether the United States has the military capability to stop Taiwan from being invaded if Taiwan cannot rely on its own strength to resist the communist invasion. Milly replied affirmatively: “Yes.”
Holly is a staunch supporter of Taiwan. He proposed the “Taiwan Defense Act” last year, requiring Washington to maintain the ability of the U.S. military to prevent the CCP from invading Taiwan by force, but the bill failed to enter a vote.
