Twenty-year-old on a trip to Calabria torn to pieces by a pack of stray dogs

SATRIAN. A trip with friends in the name of relaxation and serenity that, in a moment, turns into a nightmare and tragedy. If it were not all dramatically true it would seem the plot of a horror film what happened in the mountains surrounding Satriano, a town on the Ionian side of the Calabrian Serre in the province of Catanzaro, to a twenty year old girl from Soverato. The young woman was killed by a pack of stray dogs: according to testimonies there were more than a dozen. The victim’s name was Simona Cavallaro and had come a few hours earlier with some friends for a picnic in the Monte Fiorino area, near a picnic area. Then together with another person he decided to go into the surrounding woods. The two were attacked by a pack of stray dogs that gave the girl no escape. The screams and requests for help were useless, hunted by dogs, the twenty year old was unable to get away.

The person who was with her, on the other hand, would be able to escape to safety by finding shelter in a nearby shed. Not many other details are known also because the fact happened in a mountain area, but from what we have been able to learn, the animals attacked the girl who had entered the dense vegetation in company, then biting her in vital parts to the point not to be able to give her any chance to escape. The carabinieri of the Soverato Company responsible for the territory and the firefighters intervened immediately on the spot. Later the magistrate on duty from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Catanzaro arrived, who will coordinate the investigations.

It was up to the military to inform family members of the death. In shock, the friends of the victim who had left with her to spend a few hours in carefree. The news of the twenty-year-old’s death immediately spread to Soverato where the victim lived with his family. Disbelief, disbelief and consternation were the prevailing feelings in the Ionian town of Catanzaro, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Calabria and among the people who knew the victim and his family.
