Two-story with railway | Bridge on the island of Krk: Record-breaking figures for the major project

Started at the beginning of the year Croatian Highways (HAC), the largest Croatian motorway operating company, the planning and implementation of a second bridge to the Croatian island of Krk. A call for tenders for a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment of the project was published on January 2nd. The application deadline was January 29th and the budget was set at 600,000 euros.

It was already known that the new bridge would not be built instead of, but in addition to, the existing one. It was also considered certain that it would have four road lanes and two track lanes. The construction is to be carried out as a two-story structure, with car and truck traffic above and the railway lines below. “When we renovated the existing bridge two years ago, the transport development plan also envisaged the construction of the second bridge with railway tracks,” said Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Butković at the beginning of January. The need already exists now and when the port terminal in Omišalj is completed – by the way, construction has not even started yet – this need will become even greater, the Croatian minister said.

Key data of the major project

Now – less than two weeks after the end of the submission deadline for the project planning – HAC announced the first impressive figures for the major project: The bridge will be 850 meters long. But that’s not all, because directly after the bridge, a second bridge on Krk, or rather a 900 meter long viaduct, will cross a valley on the island. The end of the viaduct will in turn lead into a 740 meter long tunnel. Including all access roads, the new connection between the mainland and the island will be more than seven kilometers long.

The location should also now be fixed. The new one will be built south of the existing bridge and will lead from the eastern end of Črišnjeva Bay across the peninsula where the Maltempo Fortress is located to Krk. The shortest air line between the mainland and the island was chosen. The planned completion date was also announced: the bridge is scheduled to open in 2030.
