Ukraine crisis, Di Maio: “170-190 thousand Russian soldiers on the border, we must avoid a war in the heart of Europe”

«We condemn Moscow’s decision to send a contingent of troops with self-styled peace-keeping functions to the territories of the two separatist republics. It is a gesture that risks exacerbating an already very tense situation. I remember that a Russian presence along the borders with Ukraine is estimated to be between 170 and 190 thousand units, ”said Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, referring to the Senate on the Ukrainian crisis.

The crisis in Ukraine “has undergone a strong and worrying acceleration, which endangers the stability and prosperity of the world and above all threatens the international order and freedom”. Di Maio made it clear that if the tension does not subside there will be no bilateral meetings between Italy and Russia: «This morning we coordinated with President Draghi about the next steps to be taken to favor a diplomatic solution. We are fully committed to multilateral channels of dialogue. However, we believe that there can be no new bilateral meetings with the Russian leaders as long as there are no signs of easing of tension, a line also adopted by our European allies and partners in the last few hours ».

“At the press conference, Putin said he recognized the claims of Donetsk and Lugansk on the territory of the whole Donbass, well beyond the Russian-speaking component present in the region and therefore including areas currently under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces, asking for the recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea. This dual development risks paving the way for a large-scale military operation by Russia in Ukraine, ”the foreign minister said.

Di Maio aims for a peaceful solution: «Despite the gravity of the moment and the latest developments we are witnessing in these hours, we want to continue to focus on every diplomatic initiative that can avert a war in the heart of Europe. A solution that we still believe possible, even if with margins that are shrinking day by day ».

The Ukrainian crisis with the impact on gas prices “should lead Europe, in addition to increasing efforts on renewable energies, also to accelerate the launch of an Energy Union”. Di Maiìo assured that “Italy will be the protagonist in carrying out this project: the energy security of our continent passes through the freedom and sovereignty of all European actors”.
