Ukraine says it has shot down Russian bomber

The Ukrainian air force says it shot down a Russian Tu-22M strategic long-range bomber on Thursday night. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow is talking about a crash with probably technical causes.

According to Moscow, the plane crashed in the Stavropol region of southern Russia while returning from a combat mission. The four crew members used their ejection seats. Two of them were found alive. The third is still unknown, a fourth has been killed, reports the governor of the Russian region. The plane had no ammunition on board.

Russian and Ukrainian military bloggers shared spectacular videos on social networks, showing the 42-meter long-range bomber spinning in the air while its engine was on fire. The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, Mykola Oleshchuk, announced that this was the first time such an aircraft had been successfully shot down with a missile. Both sides’ claims about the incident could not be independently verified.

Russia used several Tu-22M3s in the combined missile and drone attack Thursday night, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. These were fired at Ukraine over the Black Sea and the Sea of ​​Azov. Two of these cruise missiles were intercepted. The reported crash site in the Stavropol region is about 600 kilometers behind the front line.
