US media: Sino-US relations worsen, diplomatic vacuum moment is coming | CCP’s ambassador to the US | Retires | Cui Tiankai

by admin

[NTD News June 26, 2021, Beijing time]The CCP’s ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, issued a farewell letter a few days ago to prepare to step down. The CCP has not announced the successor. Some US media said that the United States and China will be in a very rare moment of diplomatic vacuum since the establishment of diplomatic relations where neither party has officially appointed ambassadors. This may be the latest sign that the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated.

In response to Cui Tiankai’s departure, CNN recently commented that the 68-year-old Cui Tiankai is the longest-serving CCP ambassador to the United States. His eight-year term spans Obama and Trump. There are three US presidents with Biden, and he has witnessed tremendous changes in US-China relations.

The status of the CCP’s ambassador to the United States is equivalent to that of the CCP’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Cui Tiankai became the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Communist Party of China in 2009. In 2013, he succeeded Zhang Yesui, who returned to China as the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and has served as the ambassador to the United States.

On June 21, Cui Tiankai issued the “Farewell Letter to Overseas Chinese in the United States“, which was equivalent to an official announcement that the Chinese Communist Party’s ambassador to the United States was about to be replaced. There is no exact information about who is Cui Tiankai’s successor.

Cui Tiankai said in his farewell letter, “The current Sino-US relations are at a critical crossroads, and the US policy toward China is undergoing a new round of restructuring, facing a choice between dialogue, cooperation and confrontation of conflict.”

According to CNN’s analysis, the United States and China will be in a very rare diplomatic vacuum since the establishment of diplomatic relations where neither party has officially appointed ambassadors. This once again shows that the United States and China, the most important bilateral relationship in the world, has a major problem.

In November last year, Terry Branstad, the former U.S. ambassador to China, left Beijing before the U.S. election. Former diplomat Nicholas. Nicholas Burns is said to be the most promising successor, but the Biden administration has yet to officially announce it.

The commentary said that during the Trump era, US-China relations expanded from trade disputes to geopolitical competition, while Biden viewed China and the United States as a dispute between authoritarian and democratic systems. Cui Tiankai was supposed to retire at the age of 65, but as U.S.-China relations became increasingly tight, his retirement date was postponed.

It has been reported in the media that Xi Jinping’s cronies and Vice Foreign Minister Qin Gang may take over as ambassador to the United States.

However, CNN said that Qin Gang has never served as an ambassador, nor does he have as much diplomatic experience with the United States as Cui Tiankai. From the current tight US-China relations, all important decisions must be made by Beijing, and the Chinese Communist ambassador has almost no room for maneuver.

Current commentator Yang Wei analyzed in the “Epoch Times” article that Cui Tiankai’s curtain call on his own has not yet announced the CCP’s replacement, which seems unusual. Sino-US relations have repeatedly deteriorated. It should be difficult to suppress the doubts within the CCP. Someone must be held accountable. It is not impossible for Cui Tiankai to be thrown out.

The author analyzes that Cui Tiankai’s level is not enough to directly support Xi Jinping, but it can be used to block bullets. Yang Jiechi is a direct trader in relations with the United States. Cui Tiankai’s dereliction of duty is more likely to take the blame for Yang Jiechi.

After Yang Jiechi stepped down as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2013, he has always been active in foreign affairs, and he has even managed Sino-US diplomacy. Yang Wei believes that if Yang Jiechi is held accountable, neither Xi Jinping nor the Politburo Standing Committee members can get rid of their relationship. As a last resort, Yang Jiechi will not be thrown out, and Cui Tiankai seems to be a reasonable scapegoat.

There is also a possibility that the top CCP may try to send a signal to the U.S. government to negotiate peace. If a more moderate ambassador to the United States is replaced, it may represent that the CCP is preparing to adjust its diplomatic strategy toward the United States, at least temporarily.

Yang Wei analyzed that the U.S. government has already let go, and Biden may meet with Xi Jinping. The top CCP officials should finally wait for a chance to solve the problem. The replacement of Cui Tiankai should also be regarded as an explanation to the United States.

On June 17, US National Security Adviser Sullivan revealed that the White House may consider arranging a meeting between Biden and Xi Jinping. However, no final decision was made. The US State Department also stated that even the discussion and meeting would not mark any breakthrough in the relationship between the United States and China.
