Vaccine, the target of 90% of the population reached has been postponed to 2022

by admin

Despite the obligation of the Green pass in the workplace, in the last seven days in Italy the data on new vaccinated people has dropped by 50%, with just an average of just over 20,000 first administrations per day. Based on Lab24 data, we went from 333 thousand (the calculation is: first doses + single doses + subjects with previous Covid-19 infection who conclude the vaccination cycle with a single dose) in the period 15-21 October to 168 thousand in week 22- October 28.

Target 90% vaccinated postponed to 2022

An element that confirms the difficulty in convincing the skeptics and that will affect the achievement of that much-desired 90%, a goal declared by the commissioner for the Covid emergency, Francesco Figliuolo. In fact, another two million first doses are needed. At the current rate it would take about three months. It means target that can be reached at the beginning of February 2022.

Contagions on the rise

There are still 2.7 million over 50s who are not yet vaccinated and who, more than others – as the Gimbe Foundation explains – “are at high risk of hospitalization and death”. After all, the data from the latest ISS monitoring confirm a significant increase in infections. The incidence at the national level went from 34 to 46 new cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in a week. In the week from 20 to 26 October, the new independent monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation highlights, there was “a net increase in new weekly cases of Covid-19”, which went from 17,870 to 25,585, equal to + 43.2%. Although the growth “could in part be linked to the increase in total swabs” for the Green pass, hospitalizations, which increased by 7.5% compared to the previous week, also indicate “greater circulation of the virus”, and the rate of positivity to molecular swabs. In fact, there is an increase in the positive / molecular buffer ratio: from 2.4% on October 19 to 3.5% on October 26.

Hope: growing numbers, caution is needed

“The numbers of the pandemic in Italy are growing, even if the situation is better than in other European countries. It is necessary to be cautious and prudent, and to maintain precautionary measures such as the use of masks, ”said Health Minister Roberto Speranza, not by chance.

Signs of growth also on the hospitalization front

The first repercussions are also beginning to be seen on hospital admissions, with the occupancy rate of beds increased to 5% (still far from the critical threshold of 15%). No alarm, but careful observation, as also explained by Walter Ricciardi, professor of hygiene at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and scientific advisor to the Ministry of Health. “Certainly – he said – there will be an increase in cases between autumn and winter, but it will not be dramatic, it will be manageable: above all we will approach the third dose, as we are doing, for the most fragile”.
