On February 28, the Agricultural Rural Planning Unit (UPRA) published the food supply bulletin in the country’s wholesale centers during the month of January, and in the city of Valledupar an increase of 45% was recorded compared to the same month. from 2023.

In this regard, Julio Alejandro Sierra, economic advisor of the Central de Abastos de Valledupar (Mercabastos), explained that the UPRA is based on the reports of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), an entity that takes into account both Mercabastos and the ‘ Mercado Nuevo’, to which he goes periodically to obtain the data.

Mercabastos’ internal calculation is much lower: it indicates that in January 2023, 4,127 tons of food entered, while in January 2024 there were 4,390, that is, the variation was only 6.3% in this market.

FOOD GROUPS

The food groups that grew the most locally during that month were vegetables by 25 percent, with products such as cucumber, beans, and paprika.

Regarding the origin of products in general, Sierra assured: “We receive more from the Ocaña subregion, it is one of our largest suppliers, as well as Bucaramanga; The Urabá area with plantains and bananas also has participation; “At Cesar we receive from San José de Oriente, Manaure and Medialuna.”

From the cities of Barranquilla and Tunja they also send products to the central Vallenata. Cassava also comes from El Difícil, in the department of Magdalena.

DURING FEBRUARY

“At the moment there has been a shortage of products, but it is due to a seasonal issue, the pineapple has been a bit scarce, the onion that was entering from the Peru area has also had a significant decrease and has an impact on the onion that is coming. from the Ocaña region. The chives have also had an impact because the supply has decreased and the price has increased,” the economist explained to EL PILÓN.

One of the causes of the shortage of these products was the drought season that the country and the region went through due to the El Niño phenomenon. Farmers and marketers hope that during March the climatic and logistical conditions will be better.
