Vatican: Pope’s appeal for respect for the planet. Cop26 offers effective responses

“Everything is connected, in the world everything is intimately connected”, between planet, science, religion and man. Therefore, behaviors and actions modeled on “interdependence” and above all on mutual “respect” are needed, to counteract those “seeds of conflict” such as greed, indifference, ignorance, fear, violence that cause wounds both in man and in the environment. Francis brings together scientists, experts and religious leaders – including the Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayyeb, and the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I – in the Vatican for the meeting “Faith and Science. Towards Cop 26 ”. An event ahead of the UN’s annual climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland, from 31 October to 12 November.

All those present sign a joint appeal which illustrates, among other things, various educational and training courses to be developed in favor of the care of the common home. Francis – Vatican News reports – hands over the document to the president of Cop26, Alok Sharma, and to the Italian foreign minister, Luigi Di Maio; together with it, also the three pages of his speech: “You – says Francis – have the transcription of what I have to say now and in order not to use the time that is necessary for everyone to speak, I leave the transcription in your hands, you can read it and so we go on in this celebration ». In the address delivered (unread), the Pontiff recalls that “today’s meeting, which unites many cultures and spiritualities in a spirit of fraternity, only reinforces the awareness that we are members of a single human family: we each have our own faith and spiritual tradition, but there are no cultural, political or social borders and barriers that allow us to isolate ourselves ».
