Vittorio Garda: “The Canavese will be a land of great wines”

The president of the Association of young Canavese winemakers talks about the past, present and future of local viticulture

CAREMA. There is excitement around Canavese wines. We asked the young producer and oenologist of the Cantina sociale della Serra and Carema Vittorio Garda why, also president of the young winemakers’ association which is notable for its remarkable resourcefulness.

Vittorio, would you like to tell us something about your professional career?

«I studied in Alba where I was able to meet many passionate, serious and decidedly ambitious producers and understand what a wine-growing area really is. Not just a geographical area where different wine producers coexist, but a unique pedo climatic, with a winemaking tradition that has deep roots in the past. I was envious ».

And the Canavese?

«We too, in Canavese, have very deep roots. Slowly I learned it. This can be understood from viticulture, still identifying and with more expanded forms of farming compared to other viticultural areas: sometimes lacking in technology and still consisting of only wood, often on more or less large stone terraces. They are signs of a viticulture linked to history, made of manual work and not very mechanizable, certainly less rational than in other areas. Barbera, Nebbiolo, Erbaluce as well as many other minor vines (Freisa, Croatina, Neretti) are the only raw materials. An ancient and necessarily authentic viticulture. In fact, in recent years, many new and highly ambitious companies have blossomed. The current context leads consumers in the most important countries to divert their focus more and more often towards new or simply rediscovered wine-growing areas. Like the Canavese. For these reasons, among other things, the Giovani Vignaioli Canavesani association was born in June 2020, which unites 20 new small but full of passion companies ».

What is your business idea?

«First of all, to build a more environmentally friendly supply chain, to bring as many companies as possible to become organic, to promote the Canavese as a place of good living, made up of food and wine specialties and breathtaking landscapes. We want to organize events to give us visibility. And of course making our companies economically sound. Ours is often a mountain viticulture done on terraces and where mechanization is impossible ».

It is often said that a wine has character. Is there one for the Canavese people?

«I have always thought that wines are the soul of the producer, that they are affected by the moods and passion of those who produce them, sometimes by the character and this is what customers expect. They are wines closed immediately, almost stingy. But it is enough to have a little patience to hear them evolve and become faithful to our territory: always evolving and decidedly complex. If you notice, these are the predominant characters of us Canavese. For me, the vine is above all a means of transmitting what is in the soil and in the atmosphere inside the glass. Ours is a territory capable of shaping different wines, unrivaled with the rest of the world and therefore fantastic. The Canavese will become a land of great wines, capable of attracting tourism by fueling a new economy. The new producers know this, just listen to them speak ».marco peroni
