in March, Voyager’s engineering team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) definitively determined that the problem was related to one of the spacecraft’s three on-board computers, called the Flight Data Subsystem (FDS). The FDS is responsible for compressing scientific and technical data before sending it to Earth.

A team of specialists from JPL discovered that one of the chips responsible for storing part of the FDS’s memory – including some of the FDS computer’s software code – was malfunctioning. The loss of this code rendered scientific and technical data unusable. Unable to repair the chip, the team decided to place the affected code elsewhere in the FDS memory. No FDS memory space is large enough to hold this piece of code in its entirety.

So they devised a plan to split the affected code into sections and store those sections in different locations in the FDS. To make this plan work, they also had to modify parts of the code to ensure that it all still worked as a whole. All references to code locations in other parts of FDS memory also needed to be updated.

The team began by isolating the code responsible for compressing the space probe’s technical data. On April 18, he was sent to a new place in the FDS memory. The radio signal takes about 22 and a half hours to reach Voyager 1, which is more than 24 billion kilometers from Earth. It takes another 22 and a half hours for the signal to return to Earth. When Voyager called back on April 20, specialists saw that the modification was working: For the first time in five months, they were able to check the spacecraft’s health.

Over the coming weeks, specialists will relocate and modify other affected parts of the FDS software. These include parts that will also allow sending scientific data that the probe has measured.

Voyager 2 continues normal operations. Launched more than 46 years ago, the pair of Voyager space probes is the longest and most distant space mission in human history. Before starting their journey into interstellar space, both probes flew past Saturn and Jupiter, and Voyager 2 also flew by Uranus and Neptune.

The Voyager probes’ flybys of the Solar System’s major planets provided scientists with an extraordinary opportunity to examine them up close for the first time. In addition, specialists directed each flyby in such a way that the speed of the probes increased with the help of a gravitational “slingshot”. Voyager 1 is the fourth fastest moving human-made object in space. Its speed is over 62,000 kilometers per hour. The speed record is held by the Parker solar probe, which during its flyby near the Sun reached a speed ten times higher at the lowest point of its orbit – up to 635,000 kilometers per hour.
