Waste, on plastic, errors in 27% of companies

SCS has just completed 826 inspections in reality. Economic contributions recognized to municipalities are at risk

IVREA. After the checks in the containers located in the municipalities for domestic users, the SCS has just concluded the verification of the plastic transfers by the local companies (57 municipalities). A sample of companies met with a specific appointment was selected with which to analyze the criticalities found in the use of the container or in the waste inserted. 862 companies were checked (70%) and, for 27% of these, an incorrect use of the bin emerged which can have a significant impact if compared to the weight that the non-compliant material inserted in the container can entail, risking to compromise the economic contributions recognized to the Municipalities for the recycling of plastic by Corepla.

Electric cables, pipes, paper, wooden boxes, electrical and electronic equipment, toys, these are just some examples of foreign material found in containers used by companies and which, despite being made of plastic or metal, do not constitute packaging and therefore are not recoverable in the waste supply chain.

This phase of the project aimed at companies envisaged the scheduling of appointments with users who had presented one or more critical issues: impossibility of emptying the containers due to the presence of foreign material; repeated reports over time of incorrect transfers by collection operators; frequent non-exposure of the bin; dubious attribution to the users of the container which did not allow to trace the real user.

During the appointment, each company had the opportunity to view the materials detected and traced also through photos with an expert figure trained specifically for the activity and to analyze the waste produced and those that can be correctly inserted in the bin. In the activity, 46% of the companies that recorded incorrect contributions were intercepted and, among these, the container was withdrawn for discontinued activity ascertained to 10.

The incorrect insertion of plastic and metal waste seemed to be attributable, in most cases, to misinformation and difficulties in finding correct instructions on the methods of conferment. SCS has thus prepared a brief guide with some basic instructions on what is suitable or not to insert in the bin and on the most common errors to avoid, not forgetting a brief appendix also for the domestic circuit. The information material was distributed at each appointment to complete the training and awareness raising action and is available and downloadable on the SCS website (http://www.scsivrea.it/area-comunicazione/)

Another recurring element that emerged both in the verification phase and in the direct interview phase is the presence of containers constantly exposed on the street. The bin, in fact, should be kept inside the company spaces, exposed only on passing days and for the exclusive use of the owner who requested it.

A container that is always on display is in fact also accessible to passing users who could insert non-compliant waste, as well as the shared use of the same container by several production activities not adequately trained and responsible for its correct use.

“We strongly believed in this project and, thanks to the funding received from the Anci-Conai call, we were able to implement it and implement it in such a complete and widespread way throughout the territory – says the director of SCS Andrea Grigolon – thus having the opportunity to verify and monitor a large number of companies and to be able to develop communication tools specifically designed and studied for them ». “Our priority certainly remains to improve the quality of packaging waste – concludes Grigolon – which is giving so many problems to our territory and which not only has repercussions in terms of circular economy on the recycling chain, but also on the economic contributions that are only recognized if the quantity of incorrect waste is minimal ».

This is a commitment that not only companies, but also all citizens must have in mind in order to obtain widespread and constant results over time and positive effects on the environment and on the territory. The post lockdown separate collection data, in fact, had highlighted an increase in waste abandonment and a deterioration in the quality of plastic collection, so much so that the contribution to SCS, about 80 thousand euros a year, was put at risk every month.
