The digital euro project is arousing great expectations but also doubts of two kinds. The first is linked to the fear that the ECB wants to eliminate cash, the second is that the arrival of digital currency may have a negative impact on the business of financial intermediaries, causing an outflow of capital from banks. Well, they are misperceptions. Fabio Panetta, member of the executive committee, writes it, together with Ulrich Bindseil, dg Market infrastructures and payments, who, from the ECB blog and in an editorial in the German newspaper Faz, invites us to consider the risks of non-adoption of the digital euro that is, the fact that in the future European families and businesses could find themselves in a position to resort to the services offered by a small number of technological giants.
