US President Joe Biden mentioned the new term “Taiwan agreement” for the first time in response to frequent disturbances in Taiwan on Tuesday (October 5), and did not specifically clarify the content, causing speculation from all walks of life.
Biden said at the time that he had discussed Taiwan issues with the Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, and the two agreed to abide by the “Taiwan Agreement.” He pointed out that Xi Jinping should not do anything other than abide by the agreement.
Senior Republican Senator Marc Rubio wrote to the White House on Thursday, asking the Biden administration to immediately clarify the “Taiwan Agreement” statement it mentioned.
Rubio asked the White House to answer, what does Biden’s “Taiwan Agreement” refer to? Is it a new agreement on Taiwan or a pending agreement? Has this agreement been submitted to the Senate for comment or has the Senate passed the agreement?
At the State Department’s regular briefing on Thursday, media reporters also asked State Department spokesperson Ned Price to explain this. Price replied that President Biden and the State Department are explaining the policies of the United States for more than 40 years. It has always been clear and unanimous, that is, the US “One-China Policy” is based on the Taiwan Relations Act, the three US-China Joint Communiqués, and the six guarantees to Taiwan. These documents form the basis of the Biden administration’s approach to Taiwan and cross-strait relations.
White House spokesperson Jen Psaki (Jen Psaki) was also asked at a news briefing on Wednesday (6th) what exactly Biden and Xi Jinping had talked about. She said that Biden spoke with Xi Jinping in September to reiterate the United States‘ position based on the Taiwan Relations Act, indicating that the United States needs to fulfill its commitments under the Act. This is also a point that Biden will mention in almost every leadership meeting and conversations at other levels.
