Ohio Woman Pleads Guilty to Aggravated Murder in Death of 16-Month-Old Daughter

Kristel Candelario, the Ohio woman accused of abandoning her 16-month-old daughter to vacation in Puerto Rico last summer, causing the child’s death from malnutrition, has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder.

The 32-year-old mother left the little girl alone in the house for 10 days to vacation in Detroit and Puerto Rico, only to find her lifeless upon her return.

As part of a plea deal with Cuyahoga County prosecutors, Candelario also pleaded guilty to child endangerment. The deal included the dismissal of two counts of murder and one count of felony assault.

The woman now faces a life sentence when she is sentenced on March 18.

Authorities have said Candelario left her daughter, Jailyn, at her Cleveland home when she went on vacation in June 2023. When she returned 10 days later, the child was taken to Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, where she was declared dead.

An autopsy by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the girl had died of starvation and severe dehydration.

This tragic case has shed light on the importance of responsible and attentive parenting, and the severe consequences that can result from neglecting a child’s basic needs.
