Women’s Day: Van der Bellen takes men to task

“Femicide is a men’s issue,” said the head of state in his speech at the event “Courage. Power. Change.” Van der Bellen also drew attention to the income gap; women still get paid less than men.

“Women’s rights, women’s safety, these are not women’s issues,” said Van der Bellen. Every woman and every girl must be able to live safely and free from violence and without fear of attacks and murder. One step towards changing something is also to call things by their name. “It’s not relationship dramas, it’s murders. An ‘increased rate of femicide’ means: more and more men are murdering more and more women.”

“There is a trend for young women to wear oversized T-shirts over their outfits when traveling on the subway,” Van der Bellen also discussed so-called subway shirts, which are intended to avoid obscene jokes, touching and assault . Another topic the Federal President addressed was poverty in old age. Women still did more care work. Van der Bellen complained that “massive inequalities” still exist.
