“Donating blood is already a part of my life. Joining the unpaid blood donation volunteer service team is to let more people participate in this ‘red’ cause.” The day before yesterday, in the machine collection hall of the blood station in the center of Chenzhou, “post-90s” Takeaway rider Chen Xiangyu donated blood for the 30th time to commemorate his 30th birthday. He started donating blood at the age of 19, and Chen Xiangyu is already a “senior” unpaid blood donation volunteer.
In 2011, when Chen Xiangyu was working in Beijing, his colleague had a car accident and needed a lot of blood. He rushed to the hospital to donate blood. Due to the timely treatment, the colleague turned the corner to safety. At that moment, Chen Xiangyu understood the meaning of voluntary blood donation.
In the past 11 years, Chen Xiangyu has engaged in a lot of work, but he has never wavered in donating blood for free. So far, he has donated whole blood 11 times and platelets for 37 treatments, with a total blood donation of 11,800 ml. With the increase in the number of blood donations, Chen Xiangyu realized that only by allowing more people to participate in voluntary blood donation can we have the power to save more lives.
With this belief, in 2019, Chen Xiangyu joined the volunteer blood donation team. He always has a “red vest” on his electric car so that he can “play” at any time when needed. In the past three years, Chen Xiangyu has accumulated more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service, and propaganda has driven more than 100 unpaid blood donors. His family members were infected by him and joined the ranks of voluntary blood donations one after another.
The loving “Panda Hero” donated 32,000 ml of blood in 16 years
41-year-old Liao Zhenfei is from Dongkou County, Shaoyang. After confirming that he is “panda blood” (Rh negative blood), he insisted on donating blood for 16 years, with a cumulative blood donation of 32,000 ml. In 2020, Liao Zhenfei won the National Unpaid Blood Donation Contribution Award, and in November 2021, he was named “Hunan Good Man” in the category of helping others.
The warm and enthusiastic Liao Zhenfei is a veritable “Panda Hero”. Hearing many stories of panda blood volunteers saving lives, Liao Zhenfei was ready. In May 2007, a blood donation truck drove into the tin mine where he was working. He immediately responded to the call and completed his first blood donation. Since then, he has started a life-saving mode of voluntary blood donation.
Sometimes the blood station receives urgent help, and the patient waits for panda blood to save his life. Although it will affect his work, Liao Zhenfei always goes there as scheduled. “Saving people can’t be delayed.”
At present, Liao Zhenfei has joined the Chinese hematopoietic stem cell donor database and applied to become a human organ donation volunteer, hoping to contribute more value. Liao Zhenfei told reporters that he had made an appointment with his son. On his 18th birthday, the father and son will donate blood together, leaving a special and precious “adult ceremony”.
