“Here the protagonist, Lucien, discovers the nightlife of nineteenth-century Paris”, says in the video Xavier Giannoli, director of Lost Illusions. “I wanted to create a whirling and intense scene, in which the movement of the bodies coincides with that of an era”.
The film is based on the novel Lost Illusions, by Honoré de Balzac. It is the story of Lucien (played by Benjamin Voisin), a young poet who in nineteenth-century France left the province to seek success in Paris. There, however, he will find only a world dominated by the law of profit.
Xavier Giannoli is a French director and screenwriter. The latest films he has directed are The apparition (2018) e Marguerite (2015). Lost Illusions, presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival, will be released in theaters on December 30, 2021.
