Young mother dies after five years in a coma from a postpartum tracheotomy

by admin

The vegetative state of Elena, 39, was caused by the operation. He was never able to hug his son

He was in a coma since April 28, 2016 due to a tracheostomy performed too late. Five years and (almost) five months later, the death of Elena Canazza, a 39-year-old mother who was never able to hug her baby because that tragedy occurred during childbirth.

Elena left yesterday at dawn: she was hospitalized in the long-term care of the Bonora Service Center in Camposampiero, reduced to a vegetative state with no hope of being able to recover.

Graduated in master’s and training sciences, a period as a teacher in the nursery school of Carmignano di Brenta until 2010 and then as an employee of the Paduan emporium of Decathlon, Elena Canazza leaves her husband Elia Stella, who lives in Campodarsego in the hamlet di Fiumicello, their child as well as his family of origin.

A little over a year and a half ago, in February 2020, one of the three civil cases brought against the Padua hospital was concluded in the first instance.

The compensation paid by the Paduan judge Guido Marzella (the case is now on appeal): the action was initiated by the support administrator in the name and on behalf of the unfortunate lady protected by the Vicenza lawyers Paolo Mele senior and Luca Tessarolo. No doubt on the part of the coroner Gloria Castellani of Verona, the consultant of Judge Marzella who identifies an error.

The error

The expert writes: “The conduct of the health workers, the anesthesia and resuscitation specialists who intervened in the face of the urgency of the lady caught by very serious respiratory failure which resulted in cardio-circulatory arrest, was seriously imperative and negligent due to the failure to adopt safe maneuvers life and an emergency tracheotomy … ». The consequence? “A prolonged hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the tissues) and then cerebral anoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain), the reason for the now persisting neuro-vegetative coma”.

According to Castellani, “a timely tracheotomy would most likely have changed the epilogue of the facts allowing for adequate oxygenation and safe cesarean delivery … with maintenance of brain functions.” The time elapsed between the respiratory crisis (at 19.50) and the tracheotomy (at 20.10) “is completely unjustifiable in the face of the presence of several anesthetists who were aware of the serious anatomical-dysfunctional condition of the patient’s airways and should have intervened with the emergency airway opening procedure … ». Twenty minutes without (or almost) oxygen: yet four minutes is the average time to cause irreversible brain damage.

At 8:07 pm there was birth by caesarean section while resuscitation maneuvers were in progress but not what would have been needed – at least according to the judge’s consultant – that is the tracheotomy. The lady had been hospitalized on April 25 in the Company’s gynecology clinic: suffering from a stenosis, a narrowing of the airways, the doctors had scheduled a caesarean delivery for the 29th with a “protective tracheotomy”, as a prevention in the face of possible emergencies. However, the previous evening Elena becomes cyanotic and goes into respiratory crisis. Action is taken urgently and everything goes wrong.
