Zaia: “Here are the papers that will block the European recognition of Prosek”

VENICE. «Here are the cards, the smoking gun I’ve been talking about for days, which we believe will forever block Croatia’s ambitions for European recognition of Prosek. They are tables, documents, and historical references found thanks to the work of the task force deployed by the Veneto. A story that dates back to 1382 and that has never actually affected the Croatian territory ». Words of the president of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, who announces that everything will be coordinated and evaluated at the specific table scheduled for November 2 in Venice, in the presence of all the entities concerned and the Deputy Minister Centinaio, in which the formal actions to be defined will be activate. The entire, substantial documentation, adds Zaia, is already available to the Ministry.

The first mentions of the term «Prosecco», with reference to the wine referred to in the relative PDO, date back to the 14th century. In particular, on September 20, 1382, when the city of Trieste signed an agreement whereby – entering the domains of the Austrian sovereign – it undertook to annually deliver 100 orne of the best Prosecco wine to the Duke of Austria. The word Prosecco then continued to be extensively used over the centuries to indicate the specific wine, coming from the territories of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia and this historical link constitutes, among other things, the foundation for the recognition of the DOC Prosecco referred to in Decree of 17 July 2009 of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies of the time, which was Luca Zaia. In this regard, in the copper engravings reproduced dating back to 1585 and 1590 respectively, the city of Prosecco, located just west of Trieste, is called Proseck, due to the subjection, in that historical period, of the area to the Habsburg rule. . Instead, the reproduced geographical map of the Friuli area, dating back to 1770, also engraved on copper, and printed on behalf of the Venetian government, usually uses the Italian name “Prosecco”. Which, according to Veneto, not only confirms the homonymy / identity between the names Prosecco and Prosek, but also attests to the historical tracing of the connection between the geographical area around Trieste and the “Prosecco” wine, today protected by DO. It is therefore only to this geographical area, completely foreign to the Croatian territory, that the historicity of the “Prosecco / Proseck” denomination can be linked.
