A few hours after Kovac’s separation: After Kovac’s exit: VfL Wolfsburg signs coach Ralph Hasenhüttl

As of: March 17, 2024 4:55 p.m

Bundesliga soccer club VfL Wolfsburg has hired Austrian Ralph Hasenhüttl as its new coach. The former striker succeeds Niko Kovac at the factory club, from whom the Lower Saxony team parted ways after eleven games without a win in a row.

VfL announced this on Sunday afternoon. A few hours earlier, the 2009 champion had reacted to the ongoing sporting decline and relieved Kovac of his duties. The “Wolves” were only able to win six of 26 games this season and fell back to 14th place in the table. Hasenhüttl should now protect Wolfsburg from slipping further.

The 56-year-old signed a “long-term contract” with the “Wolves,” as the club said in a statement. Kovac’s successor will be officially presented at a press conference on Monday afternoon (12 p.m.).

Hasenhüttl is celebrating a comeback to Germany

DHasenhüttl most recently looked after the English Premier League club FC Southampton for almost four years. The Graz native has been without a club since November 2022. Before his involvement on the island, Hasenhüttl was coach of RB Leipzig, FC Ingolstadt, VfR Aalen and SpVgg Unterhaching.

The Austrian also laced his shoes as a player in Germany. Among other things, he played for 1. FC Köln and SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
