The last day of the Italian Absolute Championships in Cassino ended with the assignment of the national saber titles. In the men’s match, the final was the same as in the last edition of the tricolors in Palermo in 2019: Gigi Samele against Luca Curatoli. The result was also the same with the Foggia player from the Fiamme Gialle who won the Italian flag for his third time thanks to his last hit. 15-14 the final score after an assault fought and led on a par by the two components of the Italian national team. Samele in the 16 draw had already beaten the other blue and teammate Enrico Berrè for 15-11, then in the quarterfinals he overtook Gabriele Foschini of the Army, forced to retire due to physical resentment and, in the semifinal, he won 15- 11 on the carabiniere Michele Gallo, who was awarded today as the Italian under 23 champion.

«Today was a difficult day – Samele’s words at the end of the race – I had a back problem, but I’m very happy with the result. I congratulate Luca (Curatoli ed) because he shot very well, at the last blow I had a little laugh because it was very fortuitous, but it’s always nice to shoot with him. This is a race that comes from nothing, doing it without previous sensations was complicated, but the fact that we are here after two years means that we are all doing well for the goal we have ».

In the women’s race, on the other hand, the Italian title for Rossella Gregorio from Salerno, who repeats the success of 2015. The saber of the Carabinieri Sports Center overtook the outgoing champion Sofia Ciaraglia delle Fiamme Oro 15-10, then Eloisa Passaro for 15-11 and , in the semifinal, the standard bearer of the Fire Brigade Lucia Lucarini, winner of the national under 23 title. In the final Gregorio found airman Michela Battiston, who in her part of the scoreboard had previously eliminated Benedetta Taricco, bronze medalist at the under 20 World Cup of Torun 2019, but in the decisive match he succumbed 15-11 to the bell.

«Winning this Italian title was much more exciting than the first time – explained the new national champion – I come from a stressful and tiring period, I was undecided whether to participate for fear of the covid, but I also knew I needed to compete. Winning today means that the work I’m doing is right and doing it before the Olympics is always positive ».
