The International Rugby League (IRL) announced on Monday (June 20) that it would ban biological male-female confrontations “until further research is completed”.

Citing a ruling from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the IRL said that as a contact sports league, it “has a responsibility to balance individual participation rights – a longstanding tenet of rugby union and at its core from its inception – Prevent perceived risk to other participants and ensure that all participants receive a fair hearing.”

The International Olympic Committee said in 2021 that each sport should decide for itself whether trans athletes have a disproportionate advantage based on the individual aspects of the sport, sparking the latest wave of restrictions on trans athletes.

Monday’s decision by the IRL means transgender athletes will be banned from the upcoming Women’s Rugby League World Cup in October and November this year. The move by the International Rugby Union follows a similar ban by the World Rugby Association (WR), which said in 2020, given the biological male’s natural strength advantages, even after the use of hormonal drugs to suppress testosterone production, the impact on female athletes. The risk of injury is also too great.

On Sunday (June 19), the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the governing body of international swimming, ruled that any athlete who has experienced male puberty should be banned from competing in women’s competition. FINA says such athletes have a “physical advantage over biological women,” even after taking drugs to lower testosterone.

The president of the World Association of Athletics (WA), which governs international athletics, also recommended banning biological male transgender athletes from competing in women’s international competitions, saying “biology trumps gender” and that “fairness” is more important than “inclusiveness.”

WA Chairman Sebastian. Lord Sebastian Coe told BBC Sport on Monday that he welcomed FINA’s ban, also revealing that the World Athletics Association may adopt new eligibility requirements to bar transgender athletes from Female athletes face off.

Lord Coy said: “It is as it should be. We have always believed that biology trumps gender and we will continue to review our regulations against that. We will follow the science.

“We continue our research to contribute to the growing body of evidence that testosterone is a key determinant of fitness and plan to discuss our regulations with our council at the end of the year.”

Lord Coy, a former Conservative MP in the British House of Commons, as president of the World Athletics Association, has imposed restrictions on transgender athletes, requiring transgender athletes to have testosterone levels below 5 nanomoles per litre (5nmol/L) to enter Women’s game.

Lord Coy was in Budapest as a FINA guest on Monday (20th): “We’ve been trying to find a navigable path. We don’t want to stigmatize anyone…but when it comes to a crunch, if it’s inclusive and fairness, we will always be on the side of fairness – which for me is non-negotiable.”

While World Athletics’ rules are still in the review process, Lord Coy said: “The integrity of the women’s sport is very, very important here and we cannot allow a generation of young girls to think they have no future in the sport.”
