Angela Menardi and Matteo Ronzani of Curling Club 66 really believe in the opportunity to fly to China in March next year, to wear the blue jersey of the Italian curling wheelchair team. In fact, in the Finnish town of Lohja they managed to close the world championship in group B in third place, behind only the United States, the reigning champions and Switzerland, silver medalist. A result that earned him qualification for the group A world championship scheduled for October, where ten passes will be available towards the Paralympics.
It would certainly not be a novelty for Angela Menardi, Cortinese and skip of the blue team, to participate in the maximum international sporting event.
«I was in Albertville in 1992 with cross-country skiing and in Vancouver in 2010, this time in the curling team. The idea of reaching China in March is fantastic, but for now it is already precious to have regained the top flight, after the last appearance in 2012 in South Korea. Then we will see how it goes ».
Re-analyzing the Finnish week, Menardi says she is satisfied.
«It is nice to realize the amount of work carried out from August to today. Behind a third place in the world there are commitment, sacrifice, time taken from families. .. In fact, we spent every weekend between rallies and the championship. In fact, in my case I participated both in the Italian championship and in the first Double Mix championship together with Stefano Tacca, obtaining the third place. The first four teams in Finland still deserved to fight for the title. I have only one regret, namely the game lost by three centimeters against Switzerland. The Chinese Paralympics would mean in the case of Matteo Ronzani the personal debut in the five-circle event. Di Laggio di Cadore, has been practicing curling since 2016 and in Lohja he was at his second world appearance.
«I think the difference was made by the group, on and off the ice. We haven’t given a beat since last summer, despite three or four training sessions a week. Seeing all of this rewarded is fantastic. Now, however, head to the world championship A ».
