Thanks to the first ‘Avatar’ (2009) the director, screenwriter and producer James Cameron he redefined the world of blockbusters and created the planet of Pandora. He has also gotten to work on the four planned sequels. The first of them, ‘Avatar: the way of water’is expected in theaters around the world in mid-December 2022. However, it is not taken for granted that Cameron will return to direct the subsequent chapters of the saga: in the course of an interview with the British magazine Empire, he said that making these feature films is ” all-encompassing “and that could give the baton to others.
Here are Cameron’s words: “I think in the end, with the passage of time, I don’t know if after the third or fourth film, I will want give way to a director I trust and entrust him with the work, so that I can devote myself to other projects that interest me. Or maybe not, I don’t know. “The reason for the doubts is that the world of ‘Avatar’ is perfect for telling” everything I feel I have to say about family, sustainability, climate, the natural world, that is, the issues that they are important to me in real life. ”So giving up the baton is not easy.
As for the future we can say this: ‘Avatar 2’ (‘The way of the water’) and ‘Avatar 3’ were shot at the same time and therefore both bear the signature of James Cameron. And, although it all depends on how the audience will react and on the receipts in the room, the third film will be released regardless of the box office: now it exists and there is no going back. It should be released in December 2024.
The other two feature films have not yet entered production. It means that there is a script, but a final budget and shooting plan has not yet been established. In this case, the box office will make the difference. For his part, James Cameron aims to end pentalogy: “The fourth film is a cap. It all depends on the dynamics of the market. I really hope I can do the fourth and fifth chapter as well, because, ultimately, it’s a great story. ”
