Axel Bassani after Barcelona. “Second place is my biggest emotion”

by admin

«Second place on Saturday? The most beautiful emotion of my sporting life ».

Few doubts about it, and Axel Bassani answered them as we expected. On the other hand, it is difficult to give the 22-year-old driver from Seren del Grappa, a fraction of Caupo to be precise. We need to retrace the Superbike weekend in Barcelona: from the joy of that unforgettable podium in race 1, to the great fear on Sunday morning, when the brakes stopped responding at 320 kilometers per hour. Luckily the inevitable fall proved to be without consequences, if not a few blows here and there. Road accidents, Axel knows. He decided to embrace this lifestyle from an early age.

He has never been disheartened, not even after his short and unfortunate experience in Moto 2 in 2017. Raising the white flag and dedicating himself to something else might have seemed the simplest choice. Instead Bassani worked, and a lot. Until his arrival in Superbike last winter. Interesting results so far with Motocorsa Racing at the wheel of a Ducati Panigale V4RS, among several top ten and also in the first places among the independents.

But second overall in race 1 in Barcelona is something really great.

Axel, where do we classify this podium among the joys experienced in his career?

“As high as possible, no doubt. It is an indescribable emotion, the most beautiful since I run. On the other hand, we are talking about one of those dreams that a two-wheel enthusiast has since childhood ».

How did it go.

«I had never raced in the wet yet, but there had been a couple of tests and we realized we could be between fourth and sixth place. Once I got on the bike, I felt some good sensations and after the first two or three laps I said to myself: “Keep pushing”. I was focused and at the same time happy to fight for the top positions. At one point I even passed Razgatlioglu, where the bike stopped. At that point I ran away ».

Once in your head, what did you think?

“To stay calm, so as to continue to keep up. Redding with three laps to go managed to overtake, but not bad. At the beginning of the year we assumed we would fight to be in the top fifteen, now we are commenting on a second placement… ».

Sunday morning instead a few moments of fear …

“In fact, being without brakes at 320 per hour is not exactly the most pleasant sensation. I was coming to turn 1 during the warm up and not suddenly I couldn’t slow the bike anymore. At that point I had to think about saving myself by falling to the ground. I took a few hits, but nothing serious. The team apologized because it understood what the mistake was, then working to ensure that the bike was ready for the Superpole Race ».

You had a spectacular support in the stands …

“Yup. there was my girlfriend, Denise, with relatives and friends. Getting that second place in front of them is something priceless, seeing them in the stands gave me great energy ».

You were moved on Saturday after the finish, as you could see on TV.

«These are moments in which you think back to many situations. The sacrifices, the fatigue, the falls, the travels. It is a liberating moment, because you see every aspect rewarded by an extraordinary result ».

Many admire your reaction after that unhappy experience in Moto 2.

“I don’t have good memories of that period, but slowly me and those around me got up. Now we begin to reap what is sown. The last details are missing to be able to always be competitive and still live such exciting days ».

What did your parents say?

«My dad Loris watches the races from home. He has come a couple of times to support me, but these are demanding trips, so cheer on suffering from the couch. My mom Jessica, on the other hand, only goes to recordings. He suffers too much live ».

Despite your commitments, you continue to live in Seren.

“And yes, they ask me why I didn’t move to Emilia Romagna, for example, or neighboring areas. But here I’m really fine, I have my loved ones, my friends, my routine. I only suffer from the winter months, because I don’t get along well with the cold. However, I am able to train on various tracks in the Triveneto, such as “Alle Cave” in Vittorio Veneto, consequently at the moment I don’t see the reason to leave ».

Strong roots and desire to run at full throttle, up to the next podium. Axel dreams, with full merit. GIANLUCA DA POIAN
