SASSARI. Two friendlies dry and go. The pre-season at the time of the coronavirus is dry, essential: tonight (Friday 27 August) at 9 pm the new Dinamo Banco di Sardegna will challenge Bayern Munich on the first day of the international City of Cagliari tournament. Tomorrow new commitment, again on the PalaPirastu parquet, against the winner of the match between Baskonia and Naples, scheduled for today at 18.30.
The running-in. Next Saturday Demis Cavina’s Sassari will take the field at PalaSerradimigni against Vanoli Cremona in the first match of the Italian Super Cup. This means that the two Cagliari matches this weekend will be the only friendly tests before the official matches. It is therefore essential to exploit them in the best way, certainly not from the point of view of the result, but of the running-in on a physical and tactical level. On the other hand there is a team of the highest level: coach Trinchieri’s Bayern during the summer changed several players but still presents themselves with a solid and largely tested roster. There will also be Othello Hunter, who 11 years ago was preparing to make his debut with the Dinamo shirt in his first season in Serie A, together with the other two American stars Travis Diener and James White. Obviously there will be no Sasha Grant today: the jewel from Dolianova, born in 2002, was sent on loan from the Bavarian club to Verona, in A2.
The curiosity. The crowd on Wednesday, when the PalaSerradimigni was populated with hundreds of fans for the first open day of the season, testifies to the great curiosity that is growing around the post-Pozzecco Dinamo. Among important confirmations (from Gentile to Burnell, from Bendzius to Devecchi, from Treier to Chessa), returns “home” (David Logan and Ousmane Diop) and new faces to focus on (on all Battle, Clemmons and Mekowulu), the a new group seems equipped to compete in a season that lives up to expectations. The start of preparation a week earlier did nothing but increase the expectation and therefore today it will be possible to begin to understand what the band led by Demis Cavina is made of.
The audience is there. The one scheduled between today and tomorrow is the 11th edition of the City of Cagliari tournament, organized by the Fip regional committee, which over the years has seen the best of European basketball take to the field in via Rockefeller. It will be a show again this time, with two Euroleague teams such as Baskonia and Bayern.
