From the legendary Brianese in Udine to the Pordenone section with Marcuz. Zoratti, the soul of everything: “Mirko has talent, he made me excited”

PORDENONE. The extraordinary bronze medal in weightlifting won by Mirko Zanni from Pordenone at the Tokyo Olympics is a merit and pride of the Naonian athlete and his staff. A result built over the years, step by step, conquering important goals locally, then nationally, then internationally, with the European youth title in 2014 and then the continental junior silver in 2016 which, before today, occupied a good position in the trophy case of the Zanni house, now also enriched by the latest five-circle medal.

To understand the scope of the young man from Pordenone, it is enough to remember that the last Italian medal at the Olympics in the discipline of weight lifting dates back to Los Angeles 1984, when Norberto Oberburger won gold in the category up to 110 kg. And Oberburger ‘s leadership also came after 60 years from the previous blue medal. Furthermore, in recent times the only other Friulian weightlifter who arrived at the Games was Vanni Lauzzana, in Barcelona 1992. Mirko’s fresh Olympic bronze is a result that also rewards the Friulian technical school, consolidated over the decades thanks to the intuition he had , back in 1963, a group of young people from Udine formed by the brothers Giovanni and Marcello Zoratti, by Ivano Brianese, Giuliano Miani and the late Antonio De Zorzi and Franco Degano. Pioneers of a demanding, fascinating discipline, complicated by a thousand details to take care of, both physically and athletically, and mentally. Taking advantage of a national competition set up by Coni to encourage the practice of various sports and the commitment of the Udine Fire Brigade who became passionate about weightlifting also for reasons of useful training, the bold young people of Udine who gave birth to Udinese Weightlifting obtained results so gratifying and relevant, both in the Region and on a national scale, with the various Brianese, Calzolari, Vincenzi, Mancino, that in the mid-eighties several ribs broke away from the parent company of the gym in the basement of the sports hall Benedetti. One came to life in Cervignano, with Ernesto Zanetti as its soul. Another rib was formed in Fagagna, one in Gorizia, one in Cividale, all sections with their own identity, albeit always closely linked with the Udinese Weightlifting of President Marcello Zoratti, stainless patron, in office since 1967. And a rib was born in Pordenone in 1984 on the push of Dino Marcuz, initially an athlete followed by Zoratti himself in Udine and then ended up on the banks of the Noncello for professional reasons. Mirko Zanni’s successes come from here, from the dream made concrete by these people.

«Dino Marcuz – explains Marcello Zoratti – was for years the captain of Udinese Weightlifting, in various competitions, including the Italian champion team in the 70s. Observing Zanni, trained very well, I was reminded of the period in which I went to Pordenone in Lambretta to train Leo Nadalini, the first prominent athlete of the Destra Tagliamento: he had the same talent and physique as Zanni. Then he began to work, in those days there were no opportunities in military groups. Years do ». “Dino Marcuz, an exceptional person and technician, was able to carry on his school in Pordenone, with great skills and sensitivity”. What athlete is Mirko Zanni? «A talent – conti ua Zoratti – cannot be raised to those measures that he raised in Tokyo if he does not have capacity, strength, explosiveness, spirit of sacrifice, mentality and has not trained properly. I congratulate him because he proved to be an extraordinary athlete: he thrilled me. And together with Giorgia Bordignon, another blue medal winner in Tokyo, he showed that our school is at the top ». –
