Berrettini beats Murray in the final: triumph in Stuttgart

Matteo Berrettini is back. Eighty-four days after the last match, with an operation in hand and many doubts in between, the best blue tennis player repeated his 2019 success at the Stuttgart tournament, confirming that the grass is always green for his tennis. Not surprisingly, even before defeating Andy Murray in the final in spite of his age and the slight injury that conspicuously held him back in the third set, Berrettini expressed his regret over the Russian-Belarusian issue, which this year will deprive the participants in the London ATP points tournament. Meanwhile, Berrettini’s return to the ATP 250 – even if the weight of the tournament is relative – was like a champion. A little more than two months ago the Roman decided to have surgery on his right hand after a series of other injuries that had slowed down his progress, today he took the German tournament (“but given the support I felt like I was in Italy”, he smiled Berrettini) with a prize pool of 692,235 euros: it is his first victory of the year.

In two hours and forty minutes of the match, the result was 6-4 5-7 6-3. “When I decided to play the Stuttgart tournament, I didn’t think of winning right away,” admitted Berrettini with sincerity, who after the semifinal won yesterday had on the other hand admitted to having found his tennis again. Today both he and the Scot played high profile tennis, in the first two sets in particular. A spectacular crescendo in the tournament for the Roman, who confirms himself totally at ease on grass and ready to defend the title he won last year at the Queen’s club in London next week.
