Imposing and angular, even in character: this is the new BMW Concept XM, which prefigures a large, high-performance sport utility arriving on the market at the end of 2022. Consistent with the latest models of the Elica, the “double kidney” grille front is maxi size, while the optical groups become minimal. Massive sides, 23-inch wheels and three-dimensional effect lights enrich a stylistic recipe made up of taut and broken lines, as well as deep ribs.
There is also a (slight) aftertaste of the Turbo Concept, born almost 50 years ago and forerunner of the legendary M1 of 1978, BMW’s first car signed by the Motorsport department. For BMW, the Concept XM also represents a step towards the progressive electrification of the brand. In fact, under the bonnet there is a V8 petrol engine combined with an electric motor: the maximum system power is 750 HP, with an engine torque of up to 1,000 Nm. The rechargeable hybrid mechanics, called “M Hybrid”, promises a range in electric driving mode of approximately 80 kilometers.
“With this car we wanted to make an extravagant statement by going straight to the heart of the luxury car industry. For the BMW Concept XM we have conceived a unique identity, as had never happened before for a BMW M model, ”confirms BMW’s head of design, Domagoj Dukec, in an official statement. More ordinary, so to speak, the cockpit, where the dashboard oriented towards the driver and a curved widescreen display that acts as instrumentation and infotainment stand out. Assembly of the final model will most likely take place at the Spartanburg, South Carolina factory.
