Bmw Motorrad, the novelty in a patent for angle control when cornering

by admin

After the introduction of ABS in the world of two wheels and recent radar technology, BMW is about to launch the lean angle assistant

The Bavarian house would have applied for a patent for controlling the inclination of the bike when cornering. According to what was reported by the German blog motorradonline.de, the system would act by exploiting the active control of the engine and the braking system, not only to raise the bike, but also to accentuate the lean angle, if necessary, for example in case of a driver error in the evaluation of the trajectory of the curve.

The patent: how it works

As a basic function, BMW would like to use a gyroscope, the use of a camera is also not excluded, in the front and rear of the motorcycle to acquire the necessary information on the prevailing forces acting when cornering. In case of lean angle correction, BMW Motorrad provides several functions. On the one hand the engine power can be reduced, on the other hand the use of minimal braking interventions can also reduce the angle. The patent also mentions automated clutches which should be used to decrease wheel torque. The German engineers note that this new device, unlike the ABS and traction control commonly used on most BMW models, would affect the accelerator or brakes without any action from the driver by actively correcting the lean position.
