Boxing, Papasidero new Super Welter champion: the interview

by admin

Saturday night at the PalaSantoro in Rome I won the re-match with Di Carlantonio: “Compared to July I had to increase the pace a lot. It was not obvious to win, on the contrary …”

The verdict of the vacant Italian Super Welter title between the Tuscan Marco Papasidero (10-2-4) and the Roman Mirko Di Carlantonio (11-8-1) on Saturday evening at the PalaSantoro in Rome. The two had already met on 23 July at Maccarese di Fiumicino and, on that occasion, the verdict was tied: 95-95; 95-94, 94-95. The winning strategy was by Papasidero.

PRIVATE LIFE AND PREPARATION

The thirty-two-year-old Papasidero is from Agliana (Pistoia) and is divided between the activity of a merchant and training in Pratese Boxing with the technicians Fausto Talia, Marco Bini and Gianfranco Cerbai. He is married to Giulia and has two little girls: Penelope, 3, and Anastasia, 7 months.

“The tie verdict in July was a bit tight for me – said the new Italian Super Welter champion – and on Saturday, to win, I had to unleash a boxing at a high pace, making as few mistakes as possible. In all these months I have thought about Di Carlantonio’s boxing and it was just like I imagined it: much more mobile on the legs, with his guard tightly closed trying to anticipate me, his left hook well looked after. I have always been concentrated, preferring the short distance in order not to give him an advantage over the average, which is more congenial to him. Due to an involuntary head butt in the second round, I split in the browbone of my right eye and at the corner they were good at dabbing the wound allowing me to finish the match. I do not deny that at the moment of the verdict I had my heart racing because I knew I had done well, but the victory is never taken for granted. That was the most intense and liberating moment for everyone, concluded with a big fraternal embrace ”.

A key to the final victory may have been that of greater serenity in facing the most important match of an entire career: “For this second assault on the Italian title I was calmer than in July. Perhaps because I had already had the experience of ten takes. It was a screaming victory – concluded Papasidero -, I have always considered the Italian title a goal, also because the Italian champion in each weight category is only one! The tricolor, then, always has its charm ”.
