There is an important piece of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the historic feat of Marcell Jacobs, Olympic gold medalist in the 100 meters, the queen race of any five-circle competition. That important piece has a name and surname: Paolo Camossi, 47, from Gorizia

GORIZIA. “I accompanied Marcell to the call room, a few minutes before the final. I wanted to play down the moment, take away some of the tension of those situations. I told him: “Do you know that in the semifinals you hit the fastest top speed of all?” and he just looked at me in amazement. And then I added “Now go and win this Olympics, you are the fastest man in the world” ».

There is an important piece of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the historic feat of Marcell Jacobs, Olympic gold medalist in the 100 meters, the queen race of any five-circle competition. That important piece has a name and surname: Paolo Camossi, 47 years old, from Gorizia, former triple jump champion. Since 2015 he has been the coach of Usain Bolt’s heir who, for three years, from 2015 to 2018, lived in the Isonzo capital, with his partner. Camossi knows him like the back of his hand, Paolo and Marcell live in symbiosis, side by side from 4 to 7 hours a day, during winter training. Camossi is waiting for a car to take him back to the Olympic Village from the Tokyo stadium. In the Japanese capital it is almost midnight on an incredible first August for Italian sport, perhaps the most beautiful ever.

THE VIDEOSCHEDA. Tamberi and Jacobs gold in the high jump and in the 100 meters: the historic ten minutes of Italian sport

Camossi, it is a memorable day. How did you experience the fantastic race of your athlete?

«Marcell faced the final knowing he was the man to beat. He dominated the track, made a good start, did everything well. But I will calmly watch the race looking for a nit, to understand where we can improve further. There were very strong emotions, an Italian had never gone to the final in the 100 meters at the Olympics, something great was done. And then the European record, and another immense joy for Italy, with Tamberi’s gold in the high jump. Now let’s party a little here too ».

Is there champagne on ice in the Village?

«No, no alcohol is prohibited in the Village. We will toast with Gatorade, Fanta or Coca Cola. Unless some member of the blue delegation has kept a good bottle somewhere ».

But where can the Jacobs admired in Tokyo go?

«After Montecarlo (a meeting in early July in which he was highlighted) I told him:“ Marcell, if we want to do the feat we have to remove half a support, if we can remove another support it means arriving two meters earlier ”. Now for next year the idea is to remove half the support, that is a tenth. One would sign up to do another 10 years running 9.80 ”, which is a tempone. But being satisfied is not part of the game, the coach’s mind is projected to the future, because Marcell’s career at this level has only just begun ».

Speaking of head, now for Jacobs there will be notoriety, television, sponsors. Doesn’t your coach fear he might get distracted?

«No, because he is a humble boy. He may seem aggressive, because he has tattoos and is muscular, but in reality he is good and polite. And then he knows that the only way to maintain success is to run fast and get results ».

She started coaching him in 2015, when she was just twenty. What memories do you have of the beginnings?

“I met Marcell who was a daredevil, now he’s become a man with a capital U. Before he thought more about fun, like all young people, even if he had a great talent. Now he has only one fixed thought, that of being the strongest on the track and enjoying the family. Between me and him there is total trust and friendship, even if he could be my son ».

Jacobs also lived in Gorizia …

«He moved to Friuli Venezia Giulia because I was training here, he lived in the city for three years, until 2018, in an apartment with his partner. He found himself very well, he likes Gorizia because it is a city on a human scale. With him we started with the long jump because he had great potential. In a European indoor championship, in 2018, he made two nulls that were very long, he ended up eliminated with a lot of anger. We did some speed, around 100, almost for training. From that championship the spring started and we dedicated ourselves to great speed ».
