Covid vaccines, WHO alarm: poor countries have run out of doses – breaking latest news

Vaccinations in Indonesia

Vaccines, it’s still alarm for the poorest countries. The SOS launches the WHO, the World Health Organization, which notes how many of the nations with the most backward economies and which had received vaccines against Covid 19 through the Covax initiative have finished the doses to carry on the campaign of immunization. According to the advisor to the director general of the UN agency, Bruce Aylward, the Covax program has delivered 90 million doses to 131 countries but these are not enough to protect the populations, especially at a time when Africa is preparing for a third wave.

“At least half” of the 80 low-income countries involved in the Covax initiative, said the WHO adviser, “do not have sufficient vaccines to carry out the immunization program”. A number, he explains, which may actually be much higher than official figures. Aylward explained that some of these countries have tried to make alternative arrangements to resolve the emergency paying a much higher price for vaccines compared to the market value with very serious consequences for their economies.

Only yesterday the WHO asked to keep attention on the Delta variant, the “fastest” to spread. The fear is that it could take advantage of the easing of restrictions in many countries to expand. “It is important to emphasize that two doses of the vaccine must be received to be fully protected.”
