More than 1,200 precious exhibits, more than 500 historical pictures… On the 11th, the Shanghai Sports Museum, which has been curated and constructed for three years, was officially unveiled.
The Shanghai Sports Museum is located in the Sports Building of Shanghai Cultural Relics Protection Unit, 150 Nanjing West Road. The Sports Building was originally called the Western Overseas Chinese Youth Association Building and was built in 1928. On the premise of preserving the historical features, the construction team carefully and repeatedly demonstrated that the total construction area of the 1st to 3rd floors of the Sports Building was re-planned and designed.
The brand-new Shanghai Sports Museum has four main exhibition halls: Ship of History, Light of Olympics, City of Vigor, and Window of the Future. The exhibition area of the museum is 1813 square meters, containing more than 1,200 exhibits and more than 500 historical pictures.
The construction of the Shanghai Sports Museum is the common wish of several generations of Shanghai sports people. From the original showroom to the present museum, the preparation process has received strong support from the museum industry, sports people, and folk sports enthusiasts. At the opening ceremony, Olympic champion representatives Wu Minxia, Wang Liqin, Zou Shiming, Le Jingyi, Tao Luna, and Huo Liang sent blessings to the Shanghai Sports Museum through video messages.
“A world-class city needs a world-class museum. This is an important support for the launch of the’Shanghai Culture’ brand, and it is also a cultural confidence that empowers the times with historical heritage.” said Yang Zhigang, curator of the Shanghai Museum.
The completion and opening of the Shanghai Sports Museum is a practical project for the private sector to promote the construction of Shanghai’s cultural city and enhance the city’s soft power. Xu Bin, director of the Shanghai Sports Bureau, said: “It is the original mission of the Shanghai Sports Museum to tell the historical story of Shanghai sports, tell the story of a century-old heritage, and to inherit and promote the spirit of the times and sportsmanship contained in it.”
