Astros’ Cristian Javier Ruled Out of Sunday’s Game Due to Neck Injury

WASHINGTON (AP) — Houston Astros right-hander Cristian Javier was forced to sit out Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals due to a neck injury. The Dominican pitcher will retroactively enter the 15-day injured list from April 14.

In Javier’s absence, right-hander Hunter Browns will take the mound for his fifth start of the season in the final game of the series in Washington. Brown, who holds a record of 0-3 with a 10.54 ERA, previously faced a 6-2 defeat against the Atlanta Braves on April 16 despite allowing just two runs in six innings.

According to Astros manager Joe Espada, Javier had been dealing with neck pain for the past few days, which ultimately led to his absence from the game. The decision came unexpectedly, and the team is closely monitoring his condition.

To fill the void left by Javier, the Astros have called up right-hander Spencer Arrighetti from the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Arrighetti, who struggled in his first two starts with a record of 0-2 and an 11.57 ERA, now has a chance to prove himself at the major league level.

Looking ahead, Espada mentioned that pitchers JP France and Justin Verlander are slated to start in the upcoming series against the Cubs in Chicago, but the order has yet to be determined. Arrighetti may also be considered for a starting role, along with Dominican left-hander Framber Valdez who is currently dealing with a swollen left elbow and has been pitching in road games.

As for Valdez, Espada stated that the left-hander has been able to play catch, and the team will assess his condition before making a decision on his availability for the series against Chicago. Once his health status is confirmed, a determination will be made regarding his potential return to the pitching rotation.
