The Barcelona Court has sentenced footballer Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a young woman in the bathroom of a booth at the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona. The incident occurred on the night of December 30, 2022, and involved the use of violence to force the will of the victim.

The sentence, which was notified on Thursday morning, also includes five years of monitored freedom and nine days away from the victim, whom Alves must compensate with 150 thousand euros (approximately 163 thousand dollars).

The court found that Alves “suddenly grabbed” the victim, threw her to the ground, and prevented her from moving before raping her, despite her objections and desire to leave.

The court also stated that the existence of sexual assault does not require physical injuries or evidence of heroic opposition from the victim. Alves has been in preventive detention for the crime of sexual assault, and the court’s decision takes into account the mitigating factor of reparation for the damage caused.

The news of Alves’ conviction has sent shockwaves through the football world, as the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player was once regarded as one of the sport’s most celebrated defenders. His fall from grace serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of committing such heinous acts.
