The former Udinese top scorer starts his career as a coach from Serie C with Carrarese: “The talent of the players counts more than the positions”
And now it’s getting serious. One could say so thinking of Totò Di Natale on a Serie C bench, that of Carrarese who called him to his bedside to avoid relegation.
Totò had a season behind him as coach of La Spezia strikers in Pasquale Marino’s staff and a year as a coach for the Allievi, but the youth sector is one thing, the first team is another (copyright by Francesco Guidolin).
“I am honored to have this great opportunity,” his words on the day of the presentation. Di Natale takes the place of the resigning Silvio Baldini back from five consecutive defeats, the last Sunday for 3-0 at Albinoleffe.
Baldini is not exactly any coach for Totò. He was one of his teachers at Empoli and on the evening of the last match of his career (Udinese-Carpi on 15 May 2016) Baldini was in the stands at the Friuli stadium and then at dinner with Totò after the match.
His predecessor was one of the most important coaches of his career together with Spalletti (and his deputy Domenichini who trained him in the Empoli spring), Marino, the first to decide to move him from winger to first striker, and Guidolin with who took away the greatest satisfactions on a team as well as personal level.
And so when you ask Totò which coach he had in Udine he will be most inspired by being a coach, the “captain” does not lose his balance: “If I said just one name, I would be doing everyone else a disservice: I learned something from everyone and I will try to make the most of their teachings ».
Diplomatic as always at the media level. From a tactical point of view he will design his Carrarese with the 4-3-3, the same solution adopted with the Allievi dello Spezia.
As for the management of the dressing room, Totò cannot forget Guidolin’s masterpiece in the 2010-2011 season, the one that began with four defeats and then ended with an incredible fourth place.
Union of intentions, stimuli, but also the ability to make a group off the pitch with some team dinners all together in the middle of the week.
“We still have three games waiting for us – added Totò during the presentation -, all important, which we must play not only and not so much physically and tactically, but above all with our minds and the desire to be a team”.
He has no magic recipes – he spent all of those on the pitch – but he says: “I think the talent of the players counts more than numbers and positions, staying ten meters ahead or behind.”
For sure he will have to follow the advice of his friend Quagliarella: “I always tell Totò not to show his players the DVDs with his goals, they would risk going into depression.”
True, because certain strokes cannot be taught, they are a gift of talent. So, good luck for Totò’s new career. From now on it starts to get serious. –
