Chicago, September 30, 2021 – He woke up with a bat on his neck at his home in Lake County, in Illinois. And it wasn’t a nightmare. The animal had bitten him: it is not even clear if he had noticed. In any case Thomas Krob, 87 years old, he went to be examined and reported what happened. However, according to the US Department of Public Health, the man refused anti-rabies treatment and a month later began to experience the first symptoms of the disease that usually affects the nervous system.

Neck pain, headache, problems controlling arms and speaking, numb fingers. From there to death, communicated on 20 September, the step was short. The bat, caught, then tested positive for anger. The autopsy confirmed that the virus killed the 87-year-old. The fact dates back to several weeks ago, experts found a whole colony of bats in Mr. Krob’s home. “These animals have very small teeth, so if you are asleep or in a semi-unconscious state, you may not realize that you have been bitten.”

This is the first case of death from this disease in Illinois since 1954. According to data from the CDC, the federal body that deals with public health, cases of rabies in humans are rare in the United States. All the more so because the virus is avoidable and treatable. The cases registered every year range from 1 to 3, in 2019 no deaths were recorded. This does not mean that exposure to the disease is not common. About 60,000 Americans are treated every year: the point is that without prompt intervention, anger becomes deadly.
